Wilderness & Adventure Treatment Centers

Outdoor or experiential programs with clinical models and oversight that vary widely.

Wilderness and adventure programs use outdoor activities as part of a therapeutic or behavioral-health setting. Program models, clinical oversight, staffing, regulation, safety practices, and evidence base vary substantially. Families should not assume that an outdoor program provides the same medical or behavioral-health services as a licensed treatment facility. Before enrollment, verify the program's state licensing or oversight, clinician credentials, emergency and evacuation procedures, medication management, communication policies, restraint practices, complaint history where available, and plans for follow-up care.

What to expect from wilderness & adventure

  • Outdoor or adventure activities that vary by program model
  • Clinical services only where qualified providers and treatment are actually offered
  • Skill-building or experiential activities depending on the program
  • Transition or follow-up planning where provided
